מזג אוויר נפלא. חופים. חיי לילה מדהימים. אימון אחד ביום. נשים. יש הרבה מה לאהוב בלשחק כדורסל במדינת ישראל. שחקנים כאן, ברוב המקרים, מרוויחים טוב ורוב הקבוצות בדרך כלל משלמות את המשכורות בזמן (חלקן אפילו מקדימות). אין זה פלא שהרבה שחקני כדורסל, במיוחד אמריקאים, מגיעים לשחק כאן.

חשבתי שהרבה שחקנים מתנגדים לבוא ולשחק בישראל בגלל כל הבלאגן שיש למדינה עם המדינות המוסלמיות העוינות מסביבה. ברגע שחתמתי בנהריה סיפרתי למשפחה ולחברים שלי שאני הולך לשחק בישראל ורבים מהם היו סקפטיים לגבי ההחלטה שלי ושאלו שאלות כמו: "בטוח שם?" או "אין שם הפצצות?". אם להיות כנה, גם אני הייתי מעט סקפטי בהתחלה לגבי ההחלטה שלי. הייתי למשל מאוד זהיר כשיצאתי החוצה מהבית. אחרי 9 חודשים שאני כבר כאן הצלחתי להבין כמה התקשורת בחו"ל מנפחת דברים ומגזימה. יש מדינות עם בעיות בעולם ואנשים מסוימים מתנגדים לערכים ולרעיונות שהמדינה מייצגת ומחליטים להילחם בזה באמצעות פעולות קיצוניות של טרור כדי להוכיח את הנקודה שלהם אני מניח. אני לא יודע.

לקבוצה שלי עירוני נהריה יש קב"ט שנמצא איתנו כל הזמן. אחת החוויות הזכורות לי הייתה הנסיעה שלנו לטורקיה בשלב הטופ 16 של ליגת האלופות של פיבא למשחק נגד גזיאנטספור בטורקיה (מרחק של בערך 97 קילומטר מהגבול עם סוריה). לפני המשחק היו דיבורים על כך שאולי לא נופיע להתמודדות בגלל הסיטואציה המורכבת לקחת קבוצה ישראלית לאזור שקרוב מאוד אליו יש שטחים בשליטת דעאש. למרות זאת, אחרי כמה פגישות עם יחידות האבטחה המיוחדות של ישראל, אפשרו לנו לנסוע למשחק.

ברגע שיצאנו מתל אביב לכיוון טורקיה שמנו לב שהמסע הקרוב הולך להיות שונה ממסעות החוץ הקודמים שהיו לנו. בדרך כלל למשחקי חוץ אנחנו טסים בטיסות סחר אל העיר בה אנו נשחק לילה לפני המשחק, מקבלים את החדרים במלון ונחים טוב בלילה לקראת המשחק יום לאחר מכן. במקרה הזה טסנו לגזיאנטספור בבוקר המשחק. בלי מלון, בלי שינה טובה בלילה שלפני המשחק. פשוט ירדנו מהמטוס, שיחקנו וישר לאחר המשחק בחזרה למטוס ולישראל. זו הייתה הסיטואציה המוזרה ביותר בה לקחתי חלק לפני משחק. אה, והזכרתי שזה היה משחק בשלב הטופ 16 נכון? המנצח זוכה לעלות לטופ 8. בנסיעה למשחק הזה התלוו אלינו חבורת גברים לבושים בחליפות עם נשקים. ברגע שהגענו לגזיאנטספור פגשו אותנו נציגי הצבא הטורקי והמשטרה במטרה להעביר אותנו במהירות משדה התעופה לאולם. את הנסיעה לאולם עשינו באוטובוס משוריין – כל זה בשביל משחק כדורסל. למרות היום והמסע המוזר הזה, הצלחנו לעשות את העבודה שלנו בגזיאנטספור ולעלות לטופ 8 של ליגת האלופות של פיבא. זו בהחלט חוויה שלא אשכח לעולם.

היו גם נסיעות מדהימות במהלך העונה הזאת. ההשתתפות של הקבוצה שלי בליגת האלופות של פיבא אפשרה לי לראות ולטייל במקומות שלעולם לא חשבתי שאגיע אליהם: מונאקו (צרפת), סלוניקי (יוון), בנדירמה (טורקיה), ארהוס (דנמרק) ופראג (צ'כיה). אני בסך הכל ילד מהעיר ניו יורק, כך שבשבילי לצעוד על הריביירה הצרפתית ולבקר באותו המלון בו התארחו הדרים טים של נבחרת ארצות הברית ב-1992 כשהם היו במונטה קארלו הייתה חוויה של פעם בחיים. לחוות את כל החוויות והתרבויות השונות ביחד עם חבריי לקבוצה גם כן זו חוויה שלעולם לא אשכח.

הלוואי וכל המשפחה והחברים שלי היו יכולים לחוות איתי את כל החוויות והמקומות בהם הייתי, אבל הם יהיו חייבים להתפשר ולשמוע את הכל ממני. לאמא שלי כן הייתה הזדמנות לבוא ולבקר אותי השנה כאן בישראל. היא בדרך כלל מגיעה באזור חג המולד והסילבסטר. זו המסורת שלנו. העובדה שהיא הייתה איתי פה נתנה לי סיבה לצאת החוצה ולחוות את ההיסטוריה הנהדרת של ישראל. באחד מימי החופש שלי יצאתי לטיול מודרך ביחד עם אמא שלי וביקרנו בים המלח, יריחו, ירושלים ובית לחם. אמא שלי ואני רכבנו על גמלים, עשינו אמבטיית בוץ בים המלח, הלכנו בעיר העתיקה בירושלים והתפללנו בכותל המערבי. זה היה כמו חלום עבור אמא שלי לראות את כל הדברים האלה, את השמות והמקומות שהיא קראה עליהם בתנ"ך. לראות אותה שמחה הייתה הרגשה נהדרת עבורי. אני חייב את כל זה למשחק הכדורסל. המשחק הזה בהחלט לוקח אותך למקומות שלעולם לא חשבת שתגיע אליהם.

ביקור של אמא שלי זה תמיד כיף! אני בכלל לא צריך לנקות או לבשל בעצמי. היא בערך מטפלת בהכל ככה שאני יכול להירגע ולהתרכז אך ורק בכדורסל. זו הסיבה שהיא האמא הכי טובה בעולם. בנוסף זה גם נחמד לתת לה צ'אנס לראות אותי משחק, משהו שהיא אוהבת לעשות, אבל לא יכולה לעשות זאת הרבה מכיוון שלרוב המשחקים שלנו אינם משודרים בארצות הברית. כשהיא מגיעה לבקר אותי במשחקים שלי באירופה היא מפצה על הזמן האבוד ומוודאת שהנוכחות שלה במגרש תהיה מורגשת. היא הופכת להיות המעודדת מספר אחת ואפילו מלהיבה את שאר הקהל לעמוד על הרגליים, לצעוק ולעודד. האוהדים אוהבים שהיא מגיעה למשחקים בכל מקום שהיא נמצאת. היא תמיד מדברת על טקטיקה ועוזרת לקבוצות שלי לקלוע סלים חשובים או לעשות עצירות מפתח בהגנה. האנרגיה שלה מדבקת ואנחנו בהחלט זקוקים לזה ונדבקים ממנה. אני חושב שבתוך תוכה היא אוהבת את כל תשומת הלב שהיא מקבלת, אבל היא לעולם לא תודה בזה.

במשך רוב חיי הייתי כמעט תמיד צריך לעבוד בשביל כל דבר. שום דבר לא ניתן לי. לגדול בניו יורק, שם יש כמות עצומה של כישרון כדורסל, עם שחקנים נהדרים בכל העיר שמנסים להפוך את החלום שלהם למציאות, אני תמיד הרגשתי שאני משחק עם משהו להוכיח בגלל שאף פעם לא הרגשתי שאני מקבל את הכבוד אותו מגיע לי. ילדים מסוימים הוצגו במשחקי ראווה ושמו עליהם זרקור בשלב מוקדם בקריירה, ולמרות שרציתי את זה גם, זה עדיין לא היה הזמן שלי. לא הייתה לי ברירה אלא להמשיך לעבוד קשה על המשחק שלי באולם הכדורסל ולתת למשחק שלי לדבר בעד עצמו. בתיכון אקדמיית וודמר חוויתי כמה הצלחות ולמרות זאת הייתי עדיין לא מוכר להרבה לאנשים. לאט לאט התחלתי לאהוב את העובדה שאני האנדרדוג והשתמשתי ברצון שלי, של כל הזמן להוכיח משהו לאנשים, כיתרון. לקבל תחושות כאלה ולטבוע אותן בתוכי כבר מגיל צעיר עזרו לי להיות המבוגר שאני. בקולג' הסבלנות שלי עמדה במבחן מוקדם. העובדה שלא קיבלתי דקות משחק רבות נתנו לי מוטיבציה להישאר ולהתאמן עד שהתחלתי לקבל זמן משחק. הייתי רגיל לעבודה בגלל שעשיתי את זה בעבר. הכרתי מה צריך לעשות בשביל להרוויח מה שמגיע לי. רק בעונה השנייה שלי במכללות הרווחתי סוף סוף את המקום שלי בחמישייה הראשונה במשחק נגד לואיוויל. לקחתי את ההזדמנות ומאז לעולם לא הבטתי אחורה.

במעבר מהיר כמה שנים קדימה, קיבלתי את הצ'אנס לשחק בישראל. בתחילה קיבלתי הצעה, אך היא הייתה הצעה רק לחודש שיהווה מבחן עבורי להישארות לחוזה ארוך יותר. בשלב זה בדיוק נכנסתי לעונתי השישית כשחקן מקצועני. רק לאחרונה שיחקתי וחוויתי שנים טובות בליגה הגרמנית הראשונה ולעולם לא היה לי שום מבחן כדי להתקבל לקבוצה – אז למה עכשיו? פעם נוספת הייתי צריך להוכיח לעצמי משהו, מה שעשיתי, והתקופה הזו הסתיימה בחתימה על חוזה עד סיום העונה בעירוני נהריה. כבר בהתחלה רציתי להיות משפיע מיידי על הקבוצה, אז השתמשתי בשני המשחקים החשובים הראשונים שלנו נגד מינסק (בלארוס) כדי להראות נוכחות והרגשתי שעזרתי לקבוצה להעפיל משלב המוקדמות של ליגת האלופות של פיבא. דברים החלו להסתדר והייתי נרגש מאוד לקראת העתיד שלי בישראל.

זמן קצר לאחר מכן החלה הליגה הישראלית. לאלה מכם שאינם יודעים, בליגה הישראלית קיים "החוק הרוסי". החוק הזה בעצם אומר שתמיד בכל זמן חייבים להיות שני ישראלים על המגרש. את מירב שנותיי המקצועיות עד כה חוויתי בגרמניה, שם אין חוק כזה וקבוצות יכולות, אם המאמן רוצה, גם לשחק עם חמישה אמריקאים בחמישייה. בישראל, רק שלושה אמריקאים יכולים להיות על המגרש ביחד ובקבוצה שלי שיחקו חמישה. זה יצר מצב שהיינו חמישה אמריקאים שמתמודדים ונאבקים על שלושה מקומות על המגרש. לאחר ההצלחה המוקדמת שלי בקבוצה חשבתי שעשיתי מספיק כדי להרוויח דקות משחק בליגה הישראלית. טעיתי.

למרות העבודה הקשה באימונים, הישארות לאימוני קליעה אחרי שהאימון היה מסתיים ועבודה של שעות נוספות בחדר הכושר, עדיין חוויתי קשיים לעלות ולקבל זמן משחק. דקות המשחק שלי היו לא יציבות. 17-20 דקות במשחק אחד ואז 5-8 דקות במשחק הבא. הרגשתי שלעולם לא אצליח להיכנס לקצב וכדי להפוך את העניין לעוד יותר גרוע – התחלנו את העונה בהפסדים. זה כבר הגיע לנקודת זמן שרציתי שהסוכן שלי יוציא אותי מישראל במהירות האפשרית. אבל אז ההזדמנות שלי הגיעה מסיטואציה מצערת.

אחד מהשחקנים האמריקאים בקבוצה סיים את העונה עקב פציעה ברגל ואמריקאי נוסף שוחרר בעקבות עבירה על חוקי הקבוצה. ההזדמנות ניתנה לי וכמו תמיד לקחתי אותה ולא הסתכלתי אחורה, ממש כמו שעשיתי בקולג'. עזרתי לקבוצה שלי לסיים בתיקו עם אותו המאזן כמו המקום החמישי בליגה הישראלית, לאחר שכבר היינו כמעט מחוץ לתמונת הפלייאוף.

השבועות האחרונים היו מטורפים עבורי! העונה שלי קיבלה שינוי של 180 מעלות. אנשים מתחילים להכיר אותי ואת המשחק שלי בעיר עכשיו. אני מרגיש שעכשיו המאמנים מבחינים בי יותר. אבל אני לא נשאב להרגשה הטובה הזאת ולתשומת הלב החדשה. אני עדיין משחק עם הרצון הזה להוכיח לכולם. אני אמשיך לתת אקסטרה עבודה בחדר הכושר לאחר כל אימון בגלל שבראש שלי אני עדיין שחקן השנה השנייה בקולג' שנלחם כדי להשיג דקות משחק.

זה זמן פלייאוף!! בפעם הראשונה בקריירה שלי אני אקח בזה חלק ואני לא יכול לחכות ליום שלישי בערב.
עם כמה שהייתי רוצה להיות עכשיו בבית עדיין יש לי פה עסקים לסיים לפני שאני חוזר.

 

 

My life in Israel

Beautiful weather. Beaches. Great nightlife. One practice a day. Women. There is much to like about playing in Israel. Players here, for the most part, earn a decent wage and most teams usually pay salaries on time (some even earlier than the actual due date). It is no wonder why a lot players, primarily Americans, come here to play.

I figured a lot of players would be discouraged from coming to Israel to play with all the turmoil they have with the surrounding Muslim countries. Once I signed here and told my family and friends, a lot were skeptical about my decision. Asking questions like, “Is it safe over there?” or “Aren’t they still bombing over there?”, if I am being honest, I too was a little skeptical in the beginning. I was very cautious whenever I stepped outside. However, after being here for about 9 months, you realize just how much the media exaggerates things. Every country has problems and certain people within those countries that disagree with certain ideals and decide to carry out extreme acts of terrorism to prove a point, I guess. I do not know.

My team has a security officer that is with us at all times. I remember we had a Top 16 game in the Fiba EuropeCup against Gaziantep in Turkey (approximately 97km from Aleppo, Syria). Prior to the game, there were talks that we might forfeit the game because of all the controversy of having an Israeli team in an area that supposedly supported the ISIS movement. However, after several meetings with the Israeli CIA we were able to go and play.

As we were leaving Tel-Aviv heading to Turkey we noticed that the trip would be different than our previous trips. Usually we fly commercial, fly into the city we will play in the night before the game, check into our hotels and get a good night rest before the game the next day. However, this time we flew to Gaziantep the morning of our game. No hotel, no good night rest. Just get off the plane, play, and then get right back on the plane to head back to Israel. It was the weirdest situation I have ever been in before a game. Oh and I did mention it was a Top 16 game right? Winner gets to move on to the Top 8. We travelled with a bunch of guys dressed in suits and concealed weapons. Once we arrived in Gaziantep, we were met by some members of the Turkish army and police all waiting to escort us from the airport to the gym. We travelled in bulletproof windowed vans — all of this for a basketball game. Despite the weirdness of the day, we were able to take care of business in Gaziantep and move on to the Top 8 of the Fiba EuropeCup. But that is definitely one experience I will never forget.

There were good parts about traveling abroad also. Playing in both the Basketball Champions League and Fiba EuropeCup allowed me to travel to some places I figured I would never go like: Monaco (France), Thessaloniki (Greece), Bandirma (Turkey), Aarhaus (Denmark), Prague (Czech Republic). I am just a kid from New York City so for me to riding along the French Riviera and visiting the same hotel the 1992 USA “Dream Team” stayed in Monte Carlo was a once in a lifetime experience. The ability to experience all of these different cultures with my teammates is something I also wont forget.

I wish all of my family and friends could have experienced all of these places with me but they will have to settle for my own personal stories. My mom did have a chance to come visit me here in Israel. She usually comes over for Christmas and New Years. It is our little tradition. Her being here gave me a reason to go out and explore all the great history of Israel. So, on one of my days off, we did a tour that took us to the Dead Sea, Jericho, Jerusalem and Bethlehem. My mom and I rode camels, took mud baths in the Dead Sea, walked around the Old City and said prayers at the Western Wall. It was all kind of surreal for my mom to see a lot of things, names and places she once read in the Bible. Seeing her happy was a great feeling for me. But I owe it all to basketball. This game definitely takes you places you would never think you would encounter.

Having my mom visit me is always great! I don’t have to cook or clean at all. She pretty much takes care of everything so I can relax and just concentrate on basketball. That is why she is the best mom. It is also nice giving her a chance to watch me play, something she loves to do, but cannot do it often because our games are not televised in the U.S. So, when she sits courtside for my games overseas she makes up for lost time and makes sure her presence is felt. She becomes the biggest cheerleader and even engages the crowd to get on their feet to yell and scream. The fans love her wherever she goes. She always says her tactics on the sideline aid my teams in either scoring a big basket or getting a big stop on defense. Her energy is contagious and we definitely feed off of it. I think she secretly loves all the attention she gets but she will never tell anyone that.

For the most part of my life, I primarily have had to work for everything. Nothing was given to me.  Growing up in New York City, there was a hotbed of basketball talent with great players all over the city trying to turn their dreams into realities. I felt I always had to play with a chip on my shoulder because I did not feel I received the respect I deserved. Certain kids were showcased or put in the spotlight early on, although I wanted that, it was not my time. So, I had no other choice but to continue to work hard in the gym on my game and let my game speak for itself. In high school, at Lawrence Woodmere Academy, I experienced some success and notoriety; however I was still an unknown to a lot of people. I began to relish being the underdog and used that chip on my shoulder as an advantage. Since I had to earn everything I feel it made me more appreciative of everything. Having those qualities instilled in me at early age proved beneficial the older I became. In college my patience was tested early on. Not receiving playing time early on prompted me to stay in the gym until I was able to get some minutes on the court. I was used to the hard work because I had done it before. It wasn’t until my sophomore year that I was rewarded with the opportunity of starting a game against Louisville. I seized the opportunity and never looked back.

Fast forward some years, I have the chance to play in Israel (Ironi Nahariya). I get offered a deal but it was based on a month tryout. I was entering my sixth year as a pro. I recently experienced prosperous years in the top league in Germany where I never had to tryout for a team – so why now? I once again had to prove myself, which I did, and ended up passing the tryout and signing for the rest of the year. I wanted to make an immediate impact so I used our first two important games early against Tsomki-Minsk (Belarus) to make my presence felt and helped my team get into the inaugural Basketball Champions League. Things were looking up and I was excited about my future in Israel.

Then, the Israeli Winner League started. And for those who do not know, the Winner League has the “Russian Rule”, which is a rule that makes it mandatory to have two Israeli players be on the court at all times. I spent the majority of first five years as a pro in the German BBL where there is no rule – a team can start five Americans if the coach saw fit. In Israel, only three Americans can be on the court at one time and my team had five Americans. So, we had five Americans vying for three spots on the court. After my early success I thought I did well enough to earn some minutes in the Winner League. I was wrong.

Despite working hard in practice, shooting long after practice was over, getting extra work in the weight room I was still having difficulty getting on the court. My minutes would be so inconsistent 17-20 minutes one game and then 5-8 minutes the next game. I felt like I could never develop a rhythm. And to make matter worse, we were losing. There was a time where I wanted my agent to get me out of Israel as quickly as possible. But then, an opportunity arose out of an unfortunate situation.

One of our Americans was done for the year due to a leg injury and another American was dismissed from the team for a violation of team rules. There was an opportunity available so I seized it and never looked back, just like I had done back in college. I helped my team finished tied for 5^th place in the Winner League after almost missing the chance to make the playoffs.

The last few weeks have been crazy for me! My season has basically done a 180-degree turn. People are starting to notice me around my town now. I feel like even now my coaches are noticing me after long being an afterthought. But I do not feed into any of the new attention; I still have that chip on my shoulder. I will continue to put in the extra work after practice is over and continue putting in the extra work in the weight room because in my mind I am still that sophomore in college fighting to get some time on the court.

It is playoff time!! My first time ever as a pro and I cannot wait until Tuesday night. As much as I would like to be home I still have some business to handle over here first.
